Getting ThereLocated 320kms north of Cairns and 142kms west of Cooktown Laura is an excellent starting place for exploring this culturally rich landscape and into the northern part of Cape York Peninsula. The township of approximately 90 people is well established to meet most travelling needs. Facilities include:
Laura and Quinkan Country, named after the Aboriginal spirits, or ‘Quinkans', who inhabit the sandstone bluffs contains one of the world's most significant rock art regions. Laura also boasts a history rich in Queensland's pioneering heritage, with its part in the Palmer River gold rush, the construction of the Cooktown – Laura Railway and the Cape York telegraph line through to today's vast pastoral industry. The surrounding country contains Aboriginal paintings going back at least 15,000 years and is considered highly significant as there are several painted images are recorded that are post-contact with the first European explorers and settlers who came to the Region.Roads conditionsAccess to Laura is via the Peninsula Development Road. The unsealed section (currently 38kms) between Lakeland Downs & Laura is generally well-maintained and accessible to 2WD vehicles during the Dry Season. However, road conditions may deteriorate rapidly with rain and the road may be occasionally closed during the Wet Season. Contact the RACQ for up-to-date road conditions. |
